The Sidestep Co-op is an unincorporated club, in Christchurch, New Zealand, serving the needs of its registered members.
We are currently engaged in two primary activities:
1. Coordinating periodic meat share projects (beef, lamb, mutton, chicken, pork, rabbit, cheese, eggs), when the need and opportunity arise.
2. Coordinating a group called the P.H.D. (Proper Human Diet) Club, to provide informal mutual support and learning for members who are interested in a low carbohydrate way of eating.
The purpose of the co-op is not primarily to save money, nor necessarily to access produce of a certain type or quality – though we are certainly on the lookout for attractive deals. But the main focus is more on providing (in a small way) an avenue for people to build community while side-stepping the mainstream economy and supply chains.
We give priority to good quality and healthy food options, derived from animals that have been raised according to wholesome and ethical practices, and ethically killed. And to dealing directly with small, local producers and suppliers.
The P.H.D. Club have regular get-togethers, and also have an online forum for sharing relevant information.
The Sidestep Co-op is run on a voluntary non-profit basis – though the main coordinators of the system might get their own products at an advantageous price in some cases.
